The Legend Tomáš Prchal

March 5 — March 10, 2016

Tomáš Prchal was born in 1988 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 2008 to 2010 with Michael Rittstein, Jiří Sopko and Vladimír Kokolia. He lives and works in Prague.

“Before we knew Tomáš, he used to wear a hat stuck through with paint brushes.”

“Tomáš used to paint ponds, bushes, trees, and I remember one huge painting of a yellow apartment building. But I think Tomáš got rid of everything from this period.”

“ ‘Before he went to study with Jiří Sopko, he painted the best pictures of all. All the painters at the academy would go to look at them with secret admiration.’ Yes, Tom is one of the ones who made the best things in his first year of study. Šárka and I had to stop ourselves from always reminding him of this.”

“Tomáš tried everything possible to communicate with professors. … Rittstein didn’t like this very much. Kokolia was better material for him.”

“When I found out that Tomáš wanted to move over to our Graphics 2 Studio, I urged Šárka and Kokolia to say yes. I didn’t realize that I would never again have a moment of silence.”

“He tapped Pavel on the shoulder while painting to say he didn’t know how to paint. And he constantly got on my nerves by boiling crazy things in the drawing room, frying meat and making the whole place stink.”

“I couldn’t very well criticize him, because I was just the same.”

“Once we went dancing at the National Theatre’s New Stage, where they were having a swing evening. Tomáš showed himself to be a great dancer, born exactly for the quick jumps of swing.”

“When we were in Knínice one time in the summer, Kokolia took us into the woods. Tomáš changed from work clothes into his finest threads and off he went.”

“ ‘Has anyone warned Jitka at Galerie Havelka?’, You have nothing to worry about, Tomáš is a decent and cultured young man.”
