Lucie Svobodová and Jan Vičar belong among the most outstanding Czech graphic artists of their generation. They represent two different contemporary Czech graphic styles. Lucie uses computerized graphics while Jan prefers a classical graphic technique.
Both are graduates of prestigious Czech Art Academies and have exhibited many times in the Czech Republic and abroad. Their work is represented by private as well as public collections such as in the National Gallery; and both feel their work is innovative. But because their styles are so diverse, so far apart from one another, that this is actually the first time they have exhibited together.
Although their work is so contrasting, there are a few things they have in common. Their exhibit will naturally show different qualities of graphic art, but will also present the creations of two original, Central European artists. Their work should also be viewed in a non-ordinary context. But the well-established order of art, especially in such a conservative field as graphics, cannot be infringed upon. And that is the main principle of this exhibit. It’s different than all the others. And one’s experiences in viewing it should be different as well.
